No longer happy with the direction of her music or career her discontent bled into her personal life – leading to substance abuse and the end of her marriage. All detailed masterfully in her memoir, My Thoughts Exactly.
But even without reading her memoir the cathartic, No Shame shows Allen at her most powerfully confessional – vulnerable but by no means defenseless. The lyrics are blunt, direct and heartbreaking yet very few excuses if any are offered. Owning the pain she has caused herself and her loved ones with a sliver of optimism for better days ahead.
This album is a must have for dark pop lovers. Very few performers have the ability, discipline and control to roller coaster their listeners between emotions the way Allen does. A songstress in her absolute prime.
