My life’s a cup of sugar I borrowed
Before time began and forgot to return.
(I could be your servant)
It was a matter of time
I always said I could see, but now I’m going blind
(If I could be your servant)
It was a matter of time
I always said I could see, but now I’m going blind
(I could be your servant)
It was a matter of time
I always said I could see, but now I’m going blind
(If I could be your servant)
It was a matter of miserable time
But I heard somewhere, there was a cure for useless eyes
Named after a verse in Song of Solomon 2:15, mewithoutyou’s sophomore release, Catch for Us the Foxes marks a refined approach to their energetic and unorthodox blend of free range indie, spoken word and post hardcore influences.
I was fortunate enough to see the band on tour promoting this album around 2005 or 2006. They were the opening act in a big bill at the time. I believe the order was:
mewithoutyou
Dredg
The Blood Brothers (remember them?)
Coheed And Cambria
I was not familiar with their music at the time and when Aaron Weiss, their lead singer took the stage in dickie shorts and a shabby shirt, bearded and exhausted looking I actually thought he was the sound guy perfecting levels.
But as soon as they started with the lead song off their new album, “Torches Together” I was hooked and hours later after Coheed and Cambria played their final notes it was the mewithoutyou merch table I stood in line for. Happy for an opportunity to thank them for their wonderful show and purchase a copy of their album myself. That night, I even put a picture of them on my MySpace page which I’m fairly certain remained until the destruction of MySpace.
Airy, dreamy guitars, hypotonic drums and rolling bass lines, underneath Weiss’ panicked preaching, desperate spoken word poetry lamenting his continual struggle to live selflessly was and is still unlike anything I’ve had the chance to experience.
And as I age, it sounds better than it ever has.
