The Legend of Zelda arrives on the Game Boy Color
On this day in 1998, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX debuted on the Gameboy Color. A fully colored remake of the original Link’s Awakening that came out on the Game Boy handheld system five years prior.
Most of the original team which worked on the masterpiece, Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past (which was originally developed and released for the Super Nintendo) returned to work on a port of the game for the Game Boy. But, the project took on a life of its own – and is one of the only games in the franchise to not take place in the land of Hyrule or feature Princess Zelda.
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening featured color graphics, compatibility with the Game Boy Printer, and an exclusive color-based dungeon.

Together both original and the remake have sold over six million units worldwide.
